The Canada Summer Games bring together not only the best young athletes from across the country but also passionate coaches who guide them. Team Toba soccer Head Coaches, Raff Cantafio and Alison Clarke, with their deep connection to the sport, shared insights into their journeys, coaching philosophies, and aspirations for their athletes.

A Lifelong Passion for Soccer

For Raff and Alison, soccer wasn’t just a sport — it was a tradition

“We played in the backyard, watched matches together, and bonded over our love for the game. Now, I pass that same passion onto the athletes I coach,” stated Alison.

Raff also echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how his childhood passion for soccer naturally evolved into coaching.

“I started playing as a young child, and the opportunities provided by the sport fueled my enthusiasm. Coaching became a way for me to give back and help players achieve their potential.”

The Ideal Soccer Player

When it comes to identifying and nurturing talent, Raff and Alison share a common vision. Looking for players who are hardworking, adaptable, and, most importantly, have a strong desire to learn.

“In an ideal player, I value a balance of technical skill, tactical intelligence, physical fitness, and emotional intelligence,” Alison explained.

She also placed an emphasis on players showing their creativity and their personality through their style of play as well.

These coaches work tirelessly to help their athletes develop these traits. Raff explained how he fosters these qualities through “personalized feedback, structured training sessions, and consistent encouragement.”

Tactical Mastery and Game Strategy

Tactical analysis plays a critical role in the coaching process. The coaches break down strategies into digestible pieces, ensuring players not only understand the game plan but also feel confident executing it.

“We provide players with a clear goal and game model,” Alison explained. “This helps them understand our style of play and their roles in every moment of the game.”

The coaches integrate this analysis into every aspect of training and competition, using it to build well-rounded athletes.

“Tactical analysis is embedded in our training sessions and post-game reviews, helping players understand roles and make better decisions on the field,” Raff stated. “Teaching game strategy is critical to developing well-rounded, intelligent athletes,” as Raff also emphasized.

Fostering Team Culture and Community

For these coaches’ soccer extends beyond the field. Building a strong team culture and engaging with the community are central to their approach.

“I promote a positive environment,” Raff explained. “I do this by encouraging open communication, mutual respect, and shared goals among players and staff. This philosophy fosters a sense of unity and purpose within the team.”

Looking Ahead

As the Canada Summer Games Approach, Raff and Alison are filled with optimism and excitement. “These athletes bring an eagerness to learn and a willingness to embrace the demanding challenges ahead,” Alison shared. “The commitment and energy are already creating a positive and driven environment,” she added.

Reflecting on his role, Raff expressed his gratitude.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the development of athletes and the sport as a whole. Soccer is more than [just] a game; it’s a tool for personal growth and lifelong connections.”

Through their dedication, expertise, and love for the game, these coaches are shaping skilled athletes into confident and well-rounded individuals ready to take on challenges both on and off the field. The Canada Summer Games promise to be a showcase of talent, teamwork, and the enduring power of soccer to inspire and unite athletes.
