The Incredible Halloween Workout 2023
Every year, Sport Manitoba Performance designs a spook-tacular workout...
Sport Manitoba's Performance Centre offers our Performance Hockey program for Manitoban athletes looking to improve the physical qualities required for the sport. Check out the program overview and submit your application. You can customize your own payment plan so it's super easy to commit today!
Our program consists of:
Physical Assessment
Prior to the start of the program in May, athletes will go through a battery of movement, body composition, strength, flexibility, speed, power, and agility tests, conducted by the Performance Centre's certified strength & conditioning specialists and physiotherapists from our Sport Medicine Clinic. Follow up testing in August will compare results from the start to the finish the training program. Make up testing sessions will be booked on an individual basis if testing dates are missed by an athlete. All performance testing data will be accessible to all athletes through www.sporttesting.com website.
Hockey Strength, Aerobic, and Anaerobic Training
As athletes, we need to build a solid foundation of strength, flexibility, stamina and athleticism. Without building the foundation the athlete’s body will never be fully prepared to develop the explosive speed and power required to play hockey at its highest level. Once we build that foundation, we begin to develop the key performance characteristics for hockey (speed, quickness, power and anaerobic power and capacity). Training programs are modified every 4 weeks and are personalized according to initial assessment results and personal goals.
Speed, Agility, Quickness, and Explosiveness for Hockey
To optimize speed, agility, quickness, and explosive power, athletes must first have a solid foundation of coordination, balance, strength, and athleticism.
This aspect of the athlete’s training program provides maximum carry over to the on-ice conditioning program and to improving on-ice speed, agility, quickness and power. Unique methods and training tools developed for the Performance Hockey program will ensure that the athlete will work hard, have fun and perform to the best of their ability.
On-Ice Hockey Skills and Conditioning – Vigier Hockey
NEW THIS YEAR
Effective this summer, we will no longer offer on-ice conditioning and skills training with our program. With the current landscape of individual skills coaches, we are going to focus on our off-ice training program, so we have partnered with JP Vigier from Vigier Hockey, to refer our players to their programs over the summer months. JP Vigier is a former NHL player and is a Certified Hockey Canada Skills Coach. He is one of the top skills coaches in the province and has firsthand knowledge on how to prepare athletes for their upcoming hockey season. His programs sell out quickly so register early!
Recovery Zone
NEW THIS YEAR
A weekly class to recover from an intense week of training. An opportunity to improve flexibility, enhance mobility and stabilize joint end ranges while focusing on breathing and relaxation. Classes will be on Friday afternoons. Athletes can register for these sessions as part of their Performance Hockey Membership.
New to Sport Manitoba Performance, Normatec compression sleeves for legs, hips, and arms will be available post-exercise for 30-minute blocks of time in our new Recovery Zone area located in our Sport Science Lab.
Sport Medicine
The Sport Manitoba Medicine clinic is a full-service clinic that includes physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, athletic therapists, dietitians, and sport psychologists. As an athlete, you will be able to access the clinic within 48 hours of any injury to get a quick diagnosis. Further, if any ongoing treatment is needed, all your needs can be met under one roof, to make sure you are able to prepare for your upcoming season.
