John Kiesman: Inspiring Change and Leadership Through Football

With nine years of coaching experience, John Kiesman has been a driving force behind one of the most remarkable program turnarounds in the history of the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL).

His passion for the sport and commitment to his players have reshaped Elmwood’s football program, taking it from one of the lowest-ranked teams to a top contender, competing in AAAA playoffs against powerhouse schools like St. Paul’s, Dakota, and Oak Park.

Creating Opportunities for All Athletes

In 2018-2020, John launched the Provincial Team Prospects Program, giving players who didn’t make the Football Manitoba Provincial team or couldn’t afford the associated costs a chance to represent their province.

This initiative culminated in a game against Northwest Ontario, fostering a sense of pride and belonging for athletes who otherwise might have been overlooked. John’s efforts have sent numerous players to university and junior teams, proving his dedication to their long-term success.

Breaking Down Financial Barriers

One of John’s greatest accomplishments is making Elmwood’s football program completely free for players and their families. Through tireless fundraising efforts and support from community connections, John has eliminated the financial burdens associated with tackle football, ensuring that every athlete can participate without worry. This accessibility has strengthened the program and provided opportunities for many students who may not have been able to play otherwise.

Developing Leaders On and Off the Field

John’s focus isn’t just on athletic achievement; he is deeply committed to the personal growth of his players. His coaching philosophy emphasizes leadership development, goal setting, public speaking, and cultural awareness.

He incorporates First Nations teachings, including the Seven Grandfather Teachings, into his daily lessons, helping to build well-rounded young men who are not only successful athletes, but also responsible, compassionate leaders.

John’s belief in long-term development ensures his players are prepared for success well beyond their football careers.

Supporting At-Risk Youth

As a mentor to at-risk youth at Elmwood, John uses football as a tool to keep students engaged and motivated in school. He works closely with the administration to create plans for students to help them graduate and achieve their goals.

John’s dedication to his players’ emotional well-being is evident in the daily support he provides, ensuring they are safe, encouraged, and set up for success.

Championing Inclusivity and Diversity

John has created one of the most inclusive football programs in Manitoba, with a team that reflects the diversity of the Elmwood community.

He launched a female flag football program to give girls the opportunity to participate in the sport and has fostered a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued.

Recognized for His Impact

John Kiesman’s dedication to both football and his community has not gone unnoticed. In 2021, he was honoured as the WHSFL Coach of the Year, a testament to his leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to his players. His efforts have transformed Elmwood’s football program into one of the top teams in the league while also leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students, both on and off the field.
