Every month leading up to the 2022 Canada Summer Games, we’ll feature one of the dedicated coaches who spend countless hours giving back to sport.
Let’s get to know Special Olympics Athletics coach Janice Howe!
How long have you been coaching this sport? Why did you get involved?
I’ve been coaching with Special Olympics Athletics since 2009. I was introduced to Special Olympics Manitoba as a volunteer and became a coach as I thought they were an amazing organization. I met the athletes and just fell in love with their passion, dedication and enthusiasm.
What do you love most about coaching?
Watching athletes become better at their sport and better people in life. My proudest accomplishment was seeing two of my athletes make National Teams and winning Gold Medals at the Special Olympics World Games (pentathlon Ryan Kneitz LA 2015, Regan Hofley 2018 Dubai).
What is something you do to stay motivated and connected as a team?
Just getting together through our Zoom meetings, keeping in touch and supporting each other. We have teamed up with the Special Olympics Manitoba swim team to do this.
What are the team goals for the Games?
Working to do our best on the track and to support all Team Toba team members in their events.
What is the most important thing you want your team to remember/know going into the 2022 Canada Games?
If you train hard and do your best, you will always be a winner, no matter what you place on the track. Be a team player. Support all of your teammates on Team Toba. Have fun!
