Dawn Currie is the Executive Director of Recreation & Parks Association of Nunavut.
This past January, she used the Sport Manitoba facility to run a three-day youth leadership training program for just over 20 leaders who travelled to Winnipeg from eight different communities in Nunavut.
The group underwent training, team building exercises and lesson planning to be able to go back to Nunavut and run an after-school program called Leading the Way that involves games, sports and physical activity.
Dawn emphasized the unique necessity the facility was able to fulfill for this special training: a classroom space for education and planning, plus convenient access to a gym and sport-related resources in one place.
For example, the youth leaders were able to plan and learn how to facilitate spikeball in the meeting room spaces on the lower level, and then head upstairs to the courts to carry out what they learned and practice the game.
“It really allows them to start young and become role models in their communities,” Currie said of the youth leaders who participated in the program.
The Sport Manitoba facility is a dynamic, multi-purpose space. To learn about how you and your networks can utilize it, read this blog written by our Community Coordinator.
