Leading up to the 2025 Canada Summer Games, we are featuring dedicated athletes who go beyond the game to give back to sport. Meet female softball athlete Danika Nell!

How did you get started in this sport?

My two older siblings grew up playing multiple sports, and I looked up to both of them from an early age. My sister played softball and pitched throughout high school, and I wanted to be just like her! I taught myself how to pitch from YouTube videos and watching her play. I loved to practice and continued with it while also participating in other sports like hockey, gymnastics, and volleyball!

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?

Representing my country with the Junior Women’s National Team in both Colombia and Texas were experiences I will never forget! Wearing Canada across my chest and starting my collegiate career at Boston University in the same year made 2024 very sweet. Having the chance to represent Manitoba at the Canada Games for a second time is definitely something I am looking forward to in 2025!

What do you focus on most in your training?
I would say I approach training with the intention of utilizing my strengths while also improving my weaknesses. As a pitcher, I prioritize strength and explosiveness both in the weight room and in bullpens as I find myself to be the most successful when I feel strong and fast! Training my mental game is something I work on every day both in and out of practice.

What do you think makes a great Canada Games athlete?
A great Canada Games athlete is someone who is proud to represent their province and does so with confidence! When you compete for Manitoba, you compete for something bigger than yourself. Canada Games athletes have grit, tenacity, and passion above all else, for their respective sport.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2025 Canada Games?

I am looking forward to chasing a gold medal with my team! I am very lucky to be representing Manitoba for a second time and am looking forward to sharing my experience with the rest of my team.

What advice would you give to other Team Toba athletes?

Embrace the journey! The work you put in leading up to the games will give you the confidence you need to perform at that level, so give it everything you’ve got! Have fun and enjoy the unique experiences.
