With the 2025 Canada Summer Games approaching, Team Toba sailing team is excited for the challenge. From adapting and adjusting to ever-changing conditions to emphasizing the importance of preparation during the off-season period, Head Coach Jackie Spear is leading the way with a philosophy that’s as practical as it is inspiring.

Building a Winning Foundation: Communication, Resilience, and Work Ethic

Jackie’s sailing journey began with the Sea Cadet Program, a stepping stone that ignited her passion for the sport and, eventually, coaching.

“I enjoy being able to share my passion for the sport and give back to a community that has given so much to me over the years,” she says.

Her experiences as both an athlete and a coach have shaped her approach to training, which she distills into three core principles: work ethic, resilience, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you to be better.

“Having a good work ethic will set you apart from so many others and will serve you well in whatever you do,” Jackie explains.

These principles form the foundation of Jackie’s coaching strategy, guiding her team as they prepare to take on the pressures of high-stakes competition at the Canada Summer Games.

Applying Principles to Practice

Fostering mental resilience and focus is crucial for success. Jackie knows that a strong mindset is just as vital as physical preparation and is committed to developing both in her athletes. As she advises, ‘One race at a time, and sail your own race.’

Jackie’s approach to preparation is comprehensive, focusing on:

  • Strength and conditioning
  • Proper nutrition and hydration
  • The right gear
  • Meticulously maintained and rigged equipment

“‘No excuses!” she encourages, emphasizing that thorough preparation is the key to overcoming any challenge.

Adapting to Mother Nature

Adjusting to unpredictable weather conditions is a cornerstone of Team Toba’s training.

“It comes down to making sure the boat is properly tuned out and rigged and that your sail controls are set appropriately to the current conditions,” she explains.

Jackie highlights that body kinetics and strategy are crucial when dealing with challenging weather conditions.

“It’s important to make sure you’re well-conditioned for those extra windy days!” she says.

This is why she places such a strong focus on ensuring her athletes are physically prepared for whatever weather challenges lie ahead.

On the Road to the Games

Effective communication, resilience, work ethic, and strong mental and physical preparation are key focus areas for Jackie as she guides her team in their training for the Games.

Tools like video analysis will be invaluable during the Games, allowing athletes to refine their strategies.

“Reviewing and studying different strategic and tactical decisions that happen during a race is also beneficial for developing better decision-making skills while racing,” Jackie explains.

While Jackie is committed to ensuring her athletes are well-prepared, she also believes in the importance of having fun.

“Sail hard or sail home!” she encourages, reminding her team to give their best while enjoying the journey.
