Tournaments and qualifiers, training with the team, landing in PEI – with so many things to prepare for in advance of the Canada Games, squash sisters Anne and Emily Hargraves arrived at the 2023 Canada Winter Games ready to compete.
“It’s really cool to play on the same team together, we have a lot of fun,” says Emily.
“I feel like there were a couple hard competitions we needed to mentally prepare for, but we came in ready,” added Anne (pictured below).
The twins, 16, from Winnipeg, started in the sport when they were only six years old. Now ten years in and having played multiple other sports, it’s not hard to tell what it is that keeps them in the game.
“Our parents put us in lessons together, there’s a squash club like a four-minute walk from our house. The community is really tight-knitted and we’re all so close, it’s a pretty big factor in why we stayed with it. We’ve all known each other since we started playing,” says Emily.
With all their experience in the sport, they’re already looking ahead to the next Games, and passing on advice to up-and-coming squash players.
“Train hard, stay committed, especially in a small community you get a lot of opportunities, if you stay committed and keep playing, and then come here to have fun,” says Emily (pictured below).
And for anyone who hasn’t tried squash, or who doesn’t know much about it, Emily wants you to know, that it’s a lot harder than it looks.
“It’s really fun, and it’s a really good workout!”
