“It’s all about the team.”

Seb Regnier has been looking forward to competing in the Canada Games for more than two years. He arrived here hoping to medal in the 200 and also help his team to the podium in the 4 x 100 m relay. To say he was jacked for the Games would be an understatement.

It was about halfway through his leg of the 4 x 100 m qualifying race that his games fell apart. Team Toba was ahead of the other provinces when he felt a pop in his right quadricep and pulled up in pain. Many other athletes would have hobbled off the track straight to the med tent. Not Seb. Realizing that all the team needed to do was finish in the top four to qualify for the final, he painfully gutted it out for 30 meters to hand the baton off to teammate Jordan Soufi, who sprinted to the finish line, assuring the relay team of a spot in the final.

The next day was difficult for Seb. His games were over. Nevertheless, he was at the track to support his teammates and cheer them on. He was admittedly crushed to be out, especially as he looked at the results in the 200 m heats, knowing his times would definitely put him in the final, with a good shot at reaching the podium. Down but not out, the always smiling sprinter shared that team Toba had a deep 4 x 100 m relay team and that he would love nothing more than to see his four teammates race to a podium finish on Friday.

His dreams for the Canada Games were shattered, but Seb tried to look for the bright spot when he said… I guess there’s always next year, before flashing a big smile and heading back to the track to cheer his teammates on.
