The Games came to a triumphant close under sunny skies yesterday afternoon. With a heartwarming and spirited Closing Ceremonies, there is no doubt the Games have left a lasting impression on the Dauphin community, and all those who were a part of it.
The afternoon was filled with moments of pride and gratitude as participants, dignitaries, and spectators gathered to commemorate the culmination of a week-long celebration of sport.
Celebrating An Unforgettable Week
The ceremony began with a lively parade of athletes led by flag bearers, where competitors took their final walk in their regional colours, reflecting on the camaraderie that has become the hallmark of the Games.
We heard an address from Knowledge Keeper Rolanda Chartrand followed by O Canada sun by Avery Stykalo. Remarks from the Honourable Ron Kostyshyn, the Minister of Agriculture and Dauphin MLA, David Bosiak, the Mayor of The City of Dauphin, and Quinn Menec, Vice President of Operations of Manitoba Hydro, emphasized the outstanding athleticism and sportsmanship of the Games participants and the collective effort that brought the Games to life.
Medals were awarded in sailing and cross country athletes, and the week was recapped in a heartwarming video. Athletes cheered and waved their glow sticks in the air as they saw their regional colours and teammates on the screen.
A special moment was dedicated to recognizing the hundreds of volunteers who, when called upon, came through in grand style with the exceptional commitment and hard work that made the Games a resounding success.
The Zirka Senior Dance Ensemble added a cultural flair to the ceremony, captivating the audience with a performance that reflected the vibrant Ukrainian heritage of the host community.
Sportsmanship and Spirit
The Manitoba Games proudly presents two awards at the end of each Games to the teams who best display sportsmanship and spirit throughout the week.
Congratulations and a job well done to Team South, that was presented the Larry Desjardins Sportsmanship Award, and to Team North with the J.A. Ernst Spirit of the Games Award!
Closing Time
The flag was then lowered and carried off by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the Dauphin Detachment, and ceremoniously handed over to Co-Chair Todd Harwood of the next host city, Thompson, marking the transition and continuation of this honoured tradition.
The Games Host Committee Co-Chairs, Carla Wolfenden and Clayton Swanton, declared the 2024 Manitoba Summer Games officially closed.
Dauphin’s role in this event will be remembered for years to come, leaving a lasting legacy of community spirit, athletic excellence, and shared memories and connections we will never forget.
