At the Manitoba Summer Games, excitement reached new heights with Kaya Kopeechuk’s impressive bronze medal performance in the high jump. Representing Team North, Kaya clinched the first medal for her region, marking a significant achievement in her athletic journey.

Kaya’s intro to high jump began somewhat unexpectedly.

“I got started in high jump from Knights of Columbus, a track meet in Thompson,” she recalls. Initially, high jump wasn’t her primary interest.

According to Angela Elson, Team North’s Athletics Manager, “When she first started track, high jump was not her interest. She was trying out for long jump and her gym teacher saw her potential and suggested she do high jump. She learned to love the sport and it is now her main event when entering track meets.”

This early guidance helped Kaya discover her talent for high jump.

A Good Day for a Medal

The day of her high jump competition in Dauphin at the Manitoba Summer Games was a whirlwind for Kaya.

“It feels pretty good, unexpected though. I had a few events [that day],” she shares.

Despite a busy schedule, Kaya’s focus and determination shone through, earning her a well-deserved bronze medal.

Preparing mentally for competition takes focus.

“I just breathe and calm my nerves,” Kaya explains. This simple yet effective strategy helps her stay composed and perform at her best.

Team North and Games participants cheer for Kaya as she receives her region’s first medal.

Moving On Up

When asked about her future goals, she says she wants to beat her own records and keep improving. With a bronze medal now under her belt and a relentless drive to push her limits, Kaya Kopeechuk is set to continue making strides in the world of athletics.

Angela Elson adds, “She is grateful to have this opportunity to represent the North and showcase what the kids can achieve who have limited opportunities.”

As she celebrates this achievement, Kaya’s journey is a demonstration of her dedication and potential, making her one to watch in the future.
