The momentum is building at the Manitoba Summer Games as competition continues and the athletes represent their regions with pride. Among them is a standout rugby player and Dauphin’s own, Julien Lopez, from Team West – Green.
Rugby has been a significant part of Julien’s life since his early days in grade three, when he first picked up a rugby ball in little league.
“A lot of the guys I started with are currently in the Summer Games alongside with me,” he shares, highlighting the deep connections and shared experiences that have shaped his rugby journey.
When it comes to game prep, he takes a thoughtful approach.
“The way I mentally prepare for a game is finding a little distance from the rest of the guys and I’ll just sit there with my thoughts, thinking of what I’m going to do in the game.”
This personal ritual helps him focus and visualize his performance, setting the stage for a successful match.
Standout Moments
One of his most cherished rugby memories is scoring his first try in high school.
“The scoring part was fun, but it was the celebration with my senior teammates that I’ll never forget.”
This moment, filled with camaraderie, speaks volumes to the bonds formed through the sport.
Looking Ahead
After Games, Julien is focused on maintaining health and readiness for the next high school season.
“My goal for sports is to get into a good school and continue to play rugby for as long as I can.”
He also expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the Summer Games, especially competing in two different sports (basketball in phase one and rugby in phase two), and doing so with the support of a fantastic local crowd.
As the Games progress, this rugby player from Team West – Green continues to shine, making the most of every opportunity and leaving a lasting impression on the pitch.
